Team
Who we are
We come from industrial robotics research, embodied AI engineering, and operating roles in hardware and AI safety organizations. Between us we can translate between the languages of the robotics industry and the AI safety community.
Benjamin Alt
Chief Technology Officer
PhD in Computer Science (AI and robotics). Built and scaled an AI research lab at an industrial robotics company, served as Technical Director at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bremen, and co-founded a spin-off building a safe robot cognitive architecture. Lead organizer of the IJCAI Workshop on Safe Physical AI.
Laurie Burns-Mill
Chief Research Officer
BSc in Computer Science. Worked as an embodied AI engineer and project coordinator at a robotics startup, and has since moved into independent AI safety research on multimodal models, supervised by Sohaib Imran and David Africa.
Andrew Nelson
Chief Executive Officer
MBA and mechanical engineer. Helped build a now-acquired hardware startup from 3 to 48 people, then led programs, marketing and product at Amazon and LEGO. Moved into AI safety through the Catalyze Impact cofounder matching program, and served as Director of Communications at the Centre for Effective Altruism.
Funding
Where our funding comes from.
We're proud to announce that Coefficient Giving is supporting our work through career transition funding. We are currently fundraising for our red-teaming experiments, and developing plans for a larger round to establish and scale the lab.
